“Where the West Begins”
Fort Worth was established in 1849 at the site of the abandoned Army outpost of the same name, on a bluff overlooking the Trinity River. Eventually growing to become the center of cattle drives and later, ranching, Fort Worth was a stop on the famous Chisholm Trail. A quintessential Old West cowboy town, millions of head of cattle were driven through Fort Worth on their way north to market.
Nowadays, Fort Worth is the 15th largest U.S. city and the 5th largest in Texas. Although it is the county seat of Tarrant County, Fort Worth covers 350 square miles in four more counties: Johnson, Wise, Denton, and Parker. Lovers of all things cosmopolitan gravitate to Sundance Square, a downtown 35-block shopping and entertainment extravaganza. Shoppers and foodies stroll the red brick streets, savoring the many sophisticated, unique boutiques and nationally known stores as well as the gastronomic delights. A wide variety of clubs and theaters also awaits, plus the Bass Performance Hall, which was named as one of the top 10 opera houses in the world.
Yet for all its sophistication, Fort Worth has not lost touch with its Old West past. Shoppers with a hankering for a taste of this past – or simply those who need to appropriately clothe themselves and their equine friends – will find what they need in the Stockyard district. The Stockyard is home to Western shopping at its finest, and all things Texas. Shoppers delight in treasures like hand-tooled saddles, vintage candy, local honey, and of course, cowboy hats to grace the heads of the youngest cowgirls and cowboys to the oldest. Must-sees are the weekend rodeos and the world’s only twice-daily cattle drive.
The unique blend of the historical and contemporary, simple and elegant, makes Fort Worth a city not to be missed.
