THE UNIQUE DINING CAPITAL OF TEXAS
Located in southwestern Denton County, the modern city of Roanoke began in 1847, when 20 families settled north of its present location at nearby Denton Creek. But frequent flooding of the creek that reached as high as the rooftops convinced the residents to find a drier location, and in 1879 the settlement relocated to the present site of Roanoke. In 1881 and 1882, most of the settlers moved onto the new town site that was laid by the Texas and Pacific Railway. The new site was christened Roanoke by one of the surveyors in honor of his home town in Virginia.
Incorporated in 1933, Roanoke’s population is currently around 8,800 and boasts the appealing trait of being both a modern and eclectic, yet family-friendly small town. Examples of the latter can be seen in the town’s festivals and events that span virtually the entire year. From the Family Valentine’s Dance in early February to the Old-Fashioned Christmas Parade and Event in December and everything else in between, Roanoke hosts something for the whole family. For cooling off during those hotter months, Roanoke is home to the Hawaiian Falls Water Park. Those with a need for speed will find fun and adrenaline-pumping excitement at the Texas Motor Speedway, just three minutes from town, while travelers will find they’re only minutes from the DFW and Alliance airports.
And the eclectic? Roanoke was officially appointed by the Texas House of Representatives as “The Unique Dining Capital of Texas.” Here you’ll find restaurants for virtually every mood and taste, from the elegant, upscale gourmet restaurants to those specializing in simple, delicious, down-home goodness. Can’t decide? There’s a publication called the Unique Dining Guide available for download, featuring over 60 restaurants and with more being added soon.
Whether hungry or adventurous, locals or visitors, there’s always something right around the corner in Roanoke.
